spacer Ridge View Garden is an AHS Display Garden located in Roanoke, VA on a city lot of nearly one-half acre. Roanoke is located in the southwestern part of Virginia, we are considered the "Mid-Atlantic" area of the US and our climate zone is almost exactly on the border between zones 6 and 7. Fortunately this climate seems nearly perfect for daylilies and "Southern Belles" as well as Northern hardy daylilies all seem to thrive and grow equally well here. The greatest challenge in recent years has been dealing with the effects of long term drought.

spacer As an AHS garden judge and instructor, I grow a wide variety of newer daylilies to evaluate and garden visitors can view beds of miniatures and doubles as well as a large collection of spiders and unusual forms. And of course, there are numerous full formed large flowered daylilies growing here as well. Several beds of miniatures and spiders are grouped together for effect, but most sections of the garden are grouped by height only in a wide array of forms and colors. I love the riot of color during bloom season and have been known to move entire clumps in full bloom to different garden locations to correct "garden mistakes" or create a better color effect in the garden. A project in recent years has been to add companion perennials to the garden, which has extended bloom season and enhanced the colors of the daylilies, as well as attracted more beneficial insects. This garden is a bird and insect friendly garden. Bird houses and feeders are plentiful and you will notice birds feeding and visiting water features. Butterflies flit from flower to flower, a praying mantis might startle you, and if you're fortunate, you may even see hummingbirds visiting and fighting around the feeders!

spacerPeak bloom time usually occurs from around June 20 - July 10th, and if you should ever travel to this corner of Virginia during bloom season, please contact me at juliecov@cox.net to arrange a garden visit. More photos can also be seen at my Flickr webpage location Thank you so much for visiting.    Julie Covington
