The first 25 years we used the house only on weekends and holidays. We lived in a nearby town where my husband had his work and my 4 children went to school. But I began gardening at once. I started with some annuals and perennials, along with a small garden of vegetables and herbs for the kitchen. When my husband retired 15 years ago, and the children were grown, we moved to the country full time.
Nine years ago we bought our first computer. We both were very interested in it. I discovered the homepage of Hemerocallis Europa and I joined. It was there that I received my first daylily seeds and soon after had many nice seedlings growing in the garden. In my area daylilies are not popular yet, and new varieties are not available in garden markets or nurseries. Luckily not far away there are two hybridizers.
Many visitors from Hemerocallis Europa and a subgroup, the German Hardy Plant Society (Gesellschaft der Staudenfreunde - GdS) came to see my garden in 2004. Unfortunately it was a cool summer and the daylilies started to bloom later that year, only the early ones were in bloom and furthermore it began to rain and 50 visitors had to seek shelter in the house! A joyful gathering of gardeners nonetheless.
We have visited other European gardens twice. The first time, we were in Berlin, Germany, to visit the garden of hybridizer Dr.Tomas Tamberg and other gardens, and the second time we visited gardens in another part of Germany and also went to Belgium to visit the garden of Francois Verhaert. I was very impressed with his garden. He not only has nice daylilies but also very beautiful companion plants. We are looking forward to visiting gardens again this year.
