The Policemen's VisitToday in the afternoon, in Violet's Intensive English class, we had two visitors. They were policemen. We invited them to come because we wanted to know more things about being a policemen. Their names were Mike and John-Sebastien.by Karl T.
J-S is 22 years old. He chose to be a policeman at 15 years old and it's his first year of work in Coaticook. Mike has been working in the police for about 25 years. They chose this job because they like to help people and they like action. A person who wants to be a police officer has to go to college 3 years. When they give a ticket, the money goes to the town, to do parks etc. They are very nervous when there is a fight but it's a good thing because being nervous keeps you alert. One thing that surprised me is when they said they never shot with their gun but their gun is always on them because they can point it at the criminal to be sure he is not going to run away. The highest speed Mike drove is 260 km/h or if you prefer 140 mp/h. When there is a runaway or something like that they told us that it is very frustrating when you don't find the person. The best shift according to them is evening shift because the most part of the action is there. Sometimes there is nothing to do but in these cases they check the traffic. Eighty percent of this job is prevention. The best quality a police officer needs is judgement because his decision has to be taken immediately. The biggest part of the work is the reports. Coaticook prison is just a transition prison. The thing that surprised me the most is when they said they go to the secondary school about twice a month for drug investigation.
In conclusion the thing I liked the most was visiting the police car with all the gadgets in it. I wouldn't like to do this job but it looks very exciting and you have to be in top shape to do it.
